Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme
How do I Apply for the Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme?
If you think your household qualifies for the grant, you can download an application form from your local authority’s website. See full list of local authorities here. You must have an itemised quotation indicating the cost of the work.
In order to receive you grant, the local authority must be satisfied that you will occupy the property as your normal place of residence when works are done. If you are a tenant, this means that you must get a written approval from your landlord.
Please note: Your application for the grant will be prioritised according to your medical need. Highest priority will be given to people who are terminally ill, or where works would facilitate their discharge from hospital or care facility.
Homes Covered Under the Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme
The maximum grant available under the scheme is €6,000 or 100% of the approved net cost of proposed works. This covers work done to the following types of houses:
- Owner occupied housing
- Houses purchased from a local authority under the Tenant Purchase Scheme
- Private rented accommodation
- Housing provided under the voluntary housing capital assistance and rental subsidy
- Communal residences
Using the Mobility Aids Housing Grant to Install a Home Lift
If a member of your household has impaired mobility, you might think that a stair lift is the only option for upstairs access. However, another option that people often forget is a home lift. A stair lift can sometimes be invasive and always on display. A home lift on the other hand can provide a slicker, more elegant and less intrusive alternative. Installing a home lift is more reasonable than you think and is covered under the grant scheme.
If you are interested in installing a home lift, we highly recommend checking out this case study. Enda Coleman, who had a home lift installed for his wife Susan, shares his story.
