The Mobility Aids Housing Grant

Improve your home’s accessibility by installing a Premier Ireland home lift, with support available from the Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme

Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme

The Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme provides grants for works designed to improve the mobility and accessibility of a home. The scheme is primarily for age-related mobility issues. That being said, people with a disability can also apply for the scheme. The grant is administered by the local authorities with a maximum grant available of €6,000.

The Mobility Aids Housing Grant is means tested. The level of grant which a household can attain is determined by the gross income of each household member over 18 years of age (over 23 for full-time students). Gross incomes for household members must not exceed €30,000. In order to apply for the grant, you must have an itemised quotation from a contractor, indicating the cost of the work required.

The grant is available to cover a basic suite of works to address mobility problems. Works aided under the scheme includes:

  • Access ramps;
  • Level access showers;
  • Grab rails;
  • Home lifts;
  • Step lifts or stair lifts;
  • All minor works deemed necessary to support a household’s mobility needs.

“Having a lift in the house has changed the way we live for the better, most definitely. I’d highly recommend it for anyone in a similar situation, and I’d also suggest it instead of a stair lift if at all possible, in terms of both practicality and the psychological benefits.”

How do I Apply for the Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme?

If you think your household qualifies for the grant, you can download an application form from your local authority’s website. See full list of local authorities here. You must have an itemised quotation indicating the cost of the work.

In order to receive you grant, the local authority must be satisfied that you will occupy the property as your normal place of residence when works are done. If you are a tenant, this means that you must get a written approval from your landlord.

Please note: Your application for the grant will be prioritised according to your medical need. Highest priority will be given to people who are terminally ill, or where works would facilitate their discharge from hospital or care facility.

Homes Covered Under the Mobility Aids Housing Grant Scheme

The maximum grant available under the scheme is €6,000 or 100% of the approved net cost of proposed works. This covers work done to the following types of houses:

  • Owner occupied housing
  • Houses purchased from a local authority under the Tenant Purchase Scheme
  • Private rented accommodation
  • Housing provided under the voluntary housing capital assistance and rental subsidy
  • Communal residences

Using the Mobility Aids Housing Grant to Install a Home Lift

If a member of your household has impaired mobility, you might think that a stair lift is the only option for upstairs access. However, another option that people often forget is a home lift. A stair lift can sometimes be invasive and always on display. A home lift on the other hand can provide a slicker, more elegant and less intrusive alternative. Installing a home lift is more reasonable than you think and is covered under the grant scheme.

If you are interested in installing a home lift, we highly recommend checking out this case study. Enda Coleman, who had a home lift installed for his wife Susan, shares his story.
